“If a cartoonist has a role in society, it should be to brighten the reader’s day with a smile. A hearty laugh is preferred, but even a smile is a triumph. Creating a cartoon is a case of ‘controlled mind wandering.’ I prefer sitting down and allowing my imagination to guide me in creating characters and building worlds. I tend to spend more time daydreaming about different themes. Joe Cool came into existence just like that.”
